Caretta caretta
Loggerhead Turtles are only rare visitors to the island’s waters. They are much less commonly seen than Greens and do not use Ascension’s beaches for nesting.
Hemidactylus mercatorius
The Coconut Palm Gecko is a nocturnal lizard introduced to Ascension Island. It is most often seen at night on walls, ceilings, and tree trunks, especially around buildings and gardens where it hunts insects attracted to lights.
These geckos are well adapted to climbing, with special toe pads that allow them to grip smooth surfaces. They are typically grey-brown with mottled patterns, helping them blend into bark and stone. When threatened, they can drop their tails as a defence mechanism.
Anolis sagrei
This small lizard is an introduced species on Ascension Island. It is commonly seen in gardens, walls, and around settlements, where it hunts insects and other small invertebrates.
Males are easy to spot when they display their bright orange-red throat fan (dewlap), which they puff out by extending the skin on their neck. This dramatic display is used to attract females and to warn off rival males.
